Care Guide

Before & after your appointment

A little preparation and gentle aftercare keep fine lines crisp for years. Here's exactly how to care for your piece — and the situations where we'll need to reschedule.

Before your appointment

  • Get a good night's sleep and eat a full meal 1–2 hours before your session.
  • Stay hydrated. No alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Skip blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen) for 24–48 hours before, unless prescribed — and tell us about any medication you take.
  • No tanning or sunburn on the area for 2 weeks before. Your skin needs to be healthy — no rashes, cuts, or irritation where the tattoo will go.
  • You can lightly shave the area the day before (we can do it for you too). Come with clean, lotion-free skin.
  • Wear something comfortable with easy access to the placement spot.
  • Bring your reference photos and ideas — and arrive on time so we can start creating.

Aftercare

  • Follow the bandage instructions your artist gives you before you leave.
  • Always wash your hands first. Then gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap, and pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Apply a thin layer of the ointment we recommend (or a fragrance-free moisturizer) 2–3 times a day.
  • Don't pick, scratch, or peel — let any flakes fall off on their own.
  • No soaking for 2 weeks: no baths, pools, hot tubs, or saunas. Short showers only.
  • Keep it out of direct sun and tanning beds for 2–4 weeks. Once healed, always use SPF — fine line work fades faster in the sun than bold tattoos.
  • Avoid heavy sweating and stretching the tattooed area for the first week. Wear loose clothing over it.
  • Fine line tattoos usually heal in 2–3 weeks. Light flaking and itching are normal.

Please reschedule if…

  • You are under 18. Illinois law prohibits tattooing anyone under 18 — no exceptions, even with a parent present.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • The skin in the area isn't healthy: sunburn, rash, eczema or psoriasis flare, cuts, open wounds, or moles/birthmarks right on the design spot.
  • You feel sick, have a fever, or have an active infection.
  • You take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder (unless your doctor clears you).
  • You have uncontrolled diabetes, an immune condition, or take immunosuppressants (bring your doctor's clearance).
  • You've recently used isotretinoin (Accutane) — tell us first.
  • You're prone to keloid scarring — let's talk before you book.
  • Alcohol or drugs before your appointment — we'll happily reschedule you instead.

Questions

Good to know

How much will my tattoo cost?

Our shop minimum is $149 — your final quote depends on your design, size and placement. Fill out the Get a Tattoo Estimate form and we'll reply with a personal quote.

Does fine line hurt?

Everyone feels it differently, but we work with super fine needles and a light, precise touch — most clients describe it as very manageable, even relaxing.

Back

Pain is personal, and everyone feels it differently — but fine line work, done with super fine needles and a light, precise touch, tends to sit gentler than most.
How long does a session take?

It depends on size and detail — small pieces can take under an hour, larger custom work longer. Your estimate reply will include timing.

Will my tattoo fade?

All tattoos soften with time; fine line is the most delicate style, so sun protection (SPF, always) is what keeps it crisp for years.
